The Fever

I pushed away from the SeaLegacy 1 and drifted alone in the current, hoping to get a glimpse of one of my favourite ocean creatures. Eagle rays were said to congregate in the remote little corner of the Bahamas where I was working. Suddenly, a dark mass materialized and headed swiftly towards me. An entire fleet of eagle rays, known as a “fever,” soared in perfect formation. They darted into view for just a moment before disappearing again. The encounter was so extraordinary and so fleeting, it was as if they were never there– like some kind of desert mirage. It reminded me of those vivid dreams a fever can bring that seem real until you wake.
